Not all dog towels are equal. Choosing the right one comes down to your dog's size, coat type, and where you'll use it. Here's a practical comparison.
The doorway mat-towel vs. the travel glove towel
Large flat towels (like the Pawloumi Muddy-Paw at 31.5 × 20 in) are designed to stay by the door. You can lay them on the floor and let your dog step on them, or wrap all four paws at once. They absorb a lot of water and are machine-washable for daily use.
Glove-style towels (like the TrailDry at 11.8 × 11.8 in) are smaller and designed for one-hand control of individual paws, ears, and belly. They travel well in a bag or car glove box.
Cotton vs. microfiber
Cotton is absorbent but slow to dry. On a daily walk schedule, a cotton towel stays damp and can develop odours within a few uses. Microfiber dries 2–3× faster and traps debris between fibres rather than just spreading it.
Matching towel size to dog size
- Small dogs (under 22 lb): A glove towel is usually enough for post-walk cleanup. A 31.5 × 20 in mat can double as a drying surface.
- Medium dogs (22–55 lb): Both options work well. A mat towel handles full-body shakeouts; a glove towel handles precision paw care.
- Large dogs (over 55 lb): The mat towel is a must. Glove towels work for paws and face but a large-surface option handles the volume of water a big dog shakes off.
What to look for on the label
Look for split microfiber (not plain polyester), at least 280 gsm weight for absorbency, and machine-wash at 40°C or higher to keep it hygienic. Avoid fabric softener — it coats microfiber loops and reduces absorbency.
